FAQs - Residential Program

Can I have visitors?

If you are participating in our full-residential program, families are asked to participate in family therapy sessions and family education sessions. Onsite and Offsite Passes are determined by your treatment level and may take place on Fridays. The only people that we ask you to limit interactions with are those who trigger your eating disorder or are negative and not supportive of your recovery.

Can I see a physician and/or Psychiatrist while I am at Canopy Cove?

We have consulting physicians and psychiatrists who work closely with Canopy Cove staff. This means that these physicians are not in our building, but will see you as often as is needed during your treatment at Canopy Cove. These office visits are separate from Canopy Cove treatment costs, but are usually covered by your insurance as a medical visit.

Do I have any freetime while in treatment?

In our full-residential program, free time/leisure time is provided in the late afternoon before dinner and in the evening before bed.

Do I have to be medically stable to be eligible for Canopy Cove?

Yes, you do need medical clearance in order to be eligible for our eating disorder treatment program. Your physician may fax us current blood work, and EKG results to let us know that you are medically stable.

Do you offer any payment plans for the financial component of treatment?

We ask that you discuss any financial considerations with our business office.

Do you treat both adolescents and adults?

In our Female Residential Program, we treat both adolescents and adults.

Adolescent and adult males are accepted into our Partial Hospitalization Program.

Do you treat men and women?

We treat both men and women, adolescents and adults, in our Partial Hospitalization Program, with a treatment approach that has been individualized to meet their specific needs.

How many people are in the Canopy Cove Residential Program?

We only accept up to 10 clients in the female residential treatment program. Because we limit the number of clients, we are able to provide more individualized treatment in the form of treatment strategies and meal plans. Having a higher ratio of therapists to clients allows a continuity of care and the mutual trust necessary to provide effective treatment.

I am a vegetarian; will I have to eat meat while I am at Canopy Cove?

Alternative protein sources are provided for vegetarian preferences; however, since dairy and eggs are staple ingredients in several recipes and purchased products, vegan preferences cannot be accommodated at this time.

If my adolescent comes to Canopy Cove's Residential Program, do I need to accompany them?

Clients under the age of 18 must be admitted into the program and picked up upon discharge by a legal guardian in order to complete and sign all necessary consent forms and discharge instructions. All residential clients are supervised 24/7 therefore their guardian does not have to stay in Tallahassee for the duration of their residential treatment. However, visitation and participation in family therapy and education sessions is encouraged either in person or on the phone.

Is it permissible to drink alcohol while in treatment at Canopy Cove?

Drinking alcohol during treatment is counterproductive. We ask that you refrain from any use of alcohol or non-prescription drugs while in treatment. This will allow you to focus on recovery to the fullest extent. Alcohol and illicit drugs are prohibited in the Canopy Cove.

Is there a dress code for Canopy Cove?

Clients are encouraged to wear modest clothing that does not show skin on the torso or undergarments. Short-shorts/skirts and torn jeans are also discouraged. Weather appropriate clothing is required (i.e. jackets/pants in cold weather and no sweatshirts/jackets in warm weather). The general guideline is for clients to wear comfortable, casual clothing without representing negative messages. Close-toed shoes are required for therapeutic field trips and for equine-assisted therapy.

Is there a limit on how long someone can stay?

We do not set a limit on treatment time, however, a minimum stay of 30 days is required in our Partial Hospitalization Program for adults and a minimum stay of 60 days for adolescents. Our staff believes that the minimum length of stay is necessary to resolve underlying issues and to stabilize the severe symptoms of an eating disorder. Each client recovers from their eating disorder at their own rate, and the staff will continually make recommendations for a decreasing level of treatment based on individual client needs.

Is this a 12-step program?

No, we use the Recovery Model instead of the Addiction Model.

Is this a locked facility?

The doors are locked from the outside to protect your privacy, but the doors are not locked from the inside.

Is transportation provided?

We provide transportation to and from all doctor/lab appointments. Courtesy airport and/or bus pickup for admission to Canopy Cove, as well as return drop off, is provided during working hours on Monday through Friday when staff is available. To secure courtesy airport/bus transportation however, you must check availability with staff prior to confirming your ticket. All transportation to and from activities during treatment hours is provided by Canopy Cove staff.

Should I bring my car to Tallahassee with me?

We recommend that clients do not bring their own vehicle to the residential facility. However, if no other options are available, please discuss this prior to admission with our staff.

What are meals like at Canopy Cove Residential?

Conventional home-cooked meals are prepared by Canopy Cove staff and served to clients in the residential program. Meals include foods from all of the essential food groups and clients are exposed to a variety of items from each group. All clients in the residential program receive the same menu items; however, portion sizes are adjusted to meet nutritional goals.

What are the treatment options for continuation, step-down and aftercare?

Toward the end of your minimum required stay, your treatment team will make recommendations to meet your continued needs. This can include additional days in our intensive Residential Treatment Program, step down to our Partial Hospitalization Program, or outpatient care with an aftercare team. If you come to Canopy Cove from another therapist, we will work with that therapist to create an aftercare plan that follows the treatment you received while at Canopy Cove. If you do not have a treatment team, we will work to put a team in place before you leave.

What if I become ill while at Canopy Cove?

We will assist you in scheduling an appointment with our consulting physician to help you address any urgent medical needs. If hospitalization becomes necessary, Dr. Brogdon is on staff at the Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center and will assist you in the admission process.

What is involved in Equine-Assisted Therapy?

Our Equine-Assisted Therapy Program was developed by our founder and psychological director, Dr. Lynda Brogdon. In addition to being a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, Dr. Brogdon is a Certified Equine-Assisted Psychotherapist. The majority of sessions are conducted at the Canopy Cove stables and gardens (weather permitting). All work is ground-work; there is usually no riding. The client has freedom to choose their level of interaction with the horses.

What is the admission process?

Generally, people give us a call to let us know that they are considering the program, learn more about what we offer and clarify any outstanding questions.

o Early on we will discuss your insurance and other financial possibilities. We will check insurance coverage so we can determine your actual benefits and proceed with the best course of action.

o It's important for us to obtain a medical clearance from your current physician. This clearance would need to include results from a current EKG and necessary blood work. A copy of procedures is listed under "admissions" on this website. These procedures must be completed within 2 weeks prior to your admission.

o One of our program coordinators will help you establish a start date for beginning Canopy Cove. A phone interview is part of our admission process. During this phone conversation, we gather information from you about your history and your eating disorder.

What is your spirituality component of treatment?

We are a non-denominational, Christian-based program, but acknowledge that not everyone shares these beliefs. We respect all religions and beliefs. Our Christian counselor meets with clients and provides therapy groups.

What other costs are involved with the eating disorder program?

Medical expenses for prescriptions, procedures, and office visits are billed directly by our consulting physicians and are in addition to treatment costs. They are normally covered by insurance but we suggest that you check the actual benefits with our physician's office. To check medical benefits please call TPCA, Tallahassee Primary Care Associates at (850) 878-2222.

What should I bring with me to Canopy Cove?

A list of approved and prohibited items will be provided to you prior to admission. Casual clothing, any recreational items you may want to have with you that meet our guidelines, at least a one-week supply of current medications, clothes to wear when weights are taken each morning (i.e. shorts and tank top), pictures (without glass frame) and personal toiletries are included in this list.

What type of therapists will I be working with?

Canopy Cove's director, Dr. Lynda Brogdon, is a licensed psychologist who has specialized in eating disorder treatment for over 20 years. You will work with Dr. Brogdon as well as other Ph.D. level licensed psychologists and therapists to assist you in resolving psychological issues. You will see a spiritual therapist, music therapist, art and movement therapists, and a Registered Dietitian, among others.

What types of eating disorders do you treat?

We treat Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating/Overeating Disorders and Co-Existing Diabetes.

What will be expected of me in terms of weight gain while at Canopy Cove?

Weight stabilization is addressed on an individual basis. Meal plans are developed to insure that each person who needs to gain weight will do so in a safe and gradual manner. A rate of 1 to 2 pounds per week is realistic for most people.

Who will manage my current medications? Will I have to change them? Should I bring my medications with me?

Close medical monitoring is an important component of our program. Our consulting physician or psychiatrist will evaluate your current medications, monitor your response, and make appropriate changes for each prescription as often as needed while at Canopy Cove. We request that you bring at least one full week of medications with you. Medications are managed and secured at Canopy Cove to ensure consistency and safety.

Will I have to stay indoors all day?

Since we are in Florida, we often have lovely weather that allows us to do sessions outside year-round. We also have many therapeutic field trips that are outdoors, including equine-assisted therapy.

Will my family be involved in my treatment?

We believe that it is important for family members to be involved in weekly family therapy sessions. We invite families to attend all of these sessions, but if this is not possible (for proximity reasons) we encourage you to arrange for a phone conference session.

Will you work with the therapist I see at home?

We are happy to work with your therapist when your treatment at Canopy Cove is coming to an end. For example, if it were appropriate for you to do step-down/follow-up care as an outpatient at home, we will work to make sure that your therapist has the information needed to continue your treatment. Aftercare treatment is extremely important as you work toward total recovery. To help you step from intensive treatment to follow up care, we will also work to put together an appropriate treatment team that will meet all your aftercare needs.
