Eating disorders often present with other conditions that need to be addressed during the treatment process. Although the primary diagnoses treated at Canopy Cove are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorders, EDNOS, and co-existing diabetes, our treatment team is also experienced in providing professional help to those who are experiencing other physical and psychological conditions.
Anxiety and Depression
It is quite common for an individual suffering from an eating disorder to also experience symptoms of anxiety and depression. At Canopy Cove, a comprehensive treatment approach that combines cognitive-behavioral therapy, nutrition therapy, and psychopharmacology is used in order to effectively meet the complex needs of our population.
Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
Canopy Cove’s Treatment Team is comprised of a multi-disciplinary group of professionals trained to work with the diabetic population. Mismanagement of insulin and poor blood glucose control are often seen in those with diabetes who also suffer from an eating disorder. Our medical staff will work closely with each client to develop an individualized protocol that provides for better blood glucose control by monitoring appropriate insulin administration, developing a balanced nutrition plan, and educating the client on the importance of proper diabetes management.
Individuals with Celiac Disease require a specialized nutrition plan in order to work towards the dissolution of physical symptoms related to the disease. Our Registered Dietitian will work closely with each client to ensure that they receive the nutritional support necessary throughout their recovery. Eating disordered thoughts and behaviors related to food and body size will also be addressed both therapeutically and nutritionally.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is another frequently seen diagnosis in the eating disorder population, and one that is addressed at Canopy Cove. Through therapy, issue identification and resolution, and the use of appropriate psycho-pharmacology, the distorted thoughts and compulsive behaviors that are so problematic can be managed and hopefully resolved.
Trauma / Post Traumatic Disorder
Approximately half of the eating disorder population have suffered a significant trauma in their life. Therefore, it is important to be able to recognize when to address these issues and to have the expertise to effectively treat them. Our Canopy Cove treatment team, with over 20 years experience in providing effective trauma work, always recognizes and honors the sensitivity and readiness of the client to engage in this work.
